China Purges. Xi Becomes Mao Lite

Chinese president Xi Jinping handed out death sentences and 30 year jail terms to his political opponents this week in preparation for his coronation as president for a third term this month.
I have been reporting to you for over a year about his preparations for power:
• Slapping down tech moguls
• Choking off credit to private companies in preference to state owned enterprise
• Covid zero which I believe is a cover for purging opposition and controlling the population against potential riots
• And, now, classic purging of opponents
He has “investigated” 4 million people over the last 10 years. Many thrown in prison. Others executed. Some put in concentration camps.
His power should be solid now but the declining Chinese economy and increasing ethnic and economic strife will keep the pressure on him to continue the power crackdown.
Unfortunately, all of this means that the economy will continue to drift into the sunset due to:
• Declining working age population
• Declining population
• Lack of credit to the private sector
• Consolidation of industries into the hands of the state owned enterprises
• Bankrupt banks
• Bankrupt property companies
• Declining productivity growth
• Recession in the rest of the world.
The increasing economic pressures will increase the political pressures.
Authoritarian governments are, by their nature, sclerotic. They spend all their time, energy, thought, and resources maintaining their power rather than driving the economy forward and creating wealth for their people.
Xi's authoritarian impulses are getting stronger with the latest round of death penalties an example.
The way to make money is to short China such as shorting FXI.
